Although most noted for swimming from Cuba to Florida, Diana Nyad recently swam a bit closer to home – and for a good cause. The 64-year-old endurance swimmer swam for 48 hours straight and raised over $100,000 for Hurricane Sandy Victims.
“Tougher Than I Imagined It Would Be.”
That’s what Nyad told television hosts at Good Morning America when she emerged from a pool set up in a busy Manhattan intersection near Herald Square. According to The Guardian, thousands of spectators were able to watch her swim lap after lap – after lap – in the 40-yard pool.
Nyad, a New York native, is most famous for becoming the first person to swim from Havana, Cuba to Key West, Florida without a shark cage for protection. She completed that feat in September, and then took on the challenge of a two-day swim to raise money for people still struggling from the effects of Hurricane Sandy. The storm hit the coastal areas of New York and New Jersey on October 29, 2012.
Backed by the AmeriCares Foundation, Nyad raised $103,001 for Hurricane Sandy victims and brought attention to the fact that many of the people hit hardest by the Superstorm are still suffering and need help.
